About Capilla del Arte
Capilla del Arte combines an arts program with a building whose history reaches back to Puebla’s department-store era. The venue opened as Capilla del Arte UDLAP in 2009, after the Fundación Mary Street Jenkins granted part of the building to UDLAP for use as a cultural space.
The building was originally commissioned for the Hermanos Lion from the firm Schwartz & Meurer. Its green iron and glass structure was brought from France to Veracruz and assembled in Puebla.
The venue describes the result as an example of early-20th-century architectural avant-garde in Mexico, with an eclectic French-inspired style. It later housed the La Ciudad de México department store, operated by Lions Hnos., which had opened in 1910.
